Restaurant PortaradeAndrew and Helena Foley know their business and they do it well. In Portarade restaurant, fronting onto the square in the heart of Ferragudo, they provide a congenial atmosphere, efficient unobtrusive service and wonderful food. Andrew, himself an accomplished internationally trained chef with over 32 years of experience, is assisted by chefs from Oporto and Alentejo. The mouth watering national and international dishes on the menu make selection a real dilemma, coupled with high standards, this must account for the restaurant’s 70% return rate. We sampled Saté, chicken morsels in a subtle peanut and lemon sauce and a delicious ‘Octopus, Tuna and Prawn Salad’, in a tomato and cucumber salad for starters. Main courses were tender marinated ‘Castelo’ lamb in red wine and herbs, ‘Pork and Chicken Van Goch Special’, with garlic, onions, white wine and cream sauce and ‘Mermaids Treasure’, fillets of white fish with prawns in a creamy white wine and lobster sauce, tomato purée, herbs and topped with cheese and oven-baked. All were delicious, each with a delicately flavoured sauce, each differing from the others. Beautifully presented, the portions are generous—we couldn’t manage dessert but many of our fellow diners did. With an inventive wine list and great whiskies, this isn’t the cheapest restaurant in town, neither is it the most expensive, but for tasteful style and style with taste, you can’t afford to miss it.
